Description
The chest tomb at St Meugan's Church is made of sandstone and is of a conventional rectangular type. It features a heavy, inscribed tombstone that oversails an arcaded chest structure. The chest has three bays of round-arched blind arcading on the sides, with single blind arches at the ends. The sides and arch spandrels are decorated with grooved patterns, and there are prominent grooved imposts. The ends of the tomb have carved relief motifs, including rosettes and hearts, with the west end showcasing a well-crafted heraldic shield displaying the quartered arms of the Parrys of Llanrhydd.
The tombstone itself has a continuous relief-carved border adorned with stylised guilloche decoration, and its edges feature conventional guilloche carving. The memorial inscription on the tombstone commemorates Grace, the wife of Simon Parry of Llanrhydd, who died in 1689. Below this, the lower half of the slab contains an inscription for Simon Parry of Llanrhydd, gent, who died in 1692. At the bottom of the slab is a later inscription for Martha Lewis of Wrexham, who died in 1788. Additionally, on the north side, within the central blind arch, there is an inscription for Edward Roberts, gent, of Ruthin, who died in 1825.
