Description
The churchyard cross shaft at St Meugan's Church is a late medieval structure made of local sandstone. It features a tall tapering shaft that stands approximately 3 meters high, resting on an octagonal base that is about 50 centimeters tall. The base of the shaft has a square section, which transitions to a near-octagonal shape above, with deeply-chamfered corners adorned with simple ball-flower stops. About two-thirds of the way up the shaft, there are small relief carvings of heads on the chamfered sides, with rosette or sun motifs carved below them. At the top of the shaft is a square cross base, and a plain, later cross measuring around 20 centimeters high was found nearby during the survey. Additionally, there is some graffiti on the north and east sides of the shaft, including an incised and much-eroded date that appears to read 1672 or 1677.
