Description

The War Memorial is a Celtic-cross style monument made of grey concrete that resembles unpolished granite. It features a tapering pillar topped with a wheel-cross adorned with interlace work. The base has curved sides and a stepped top moulding. The upper section of the pillar includes a blind arch surrounded by ropework, which holds a relief figure of St Michael, with the name 'St Michael' inscribed below. The lower part of the pillar displays an inverted dagger in relief and interlace work, with inscriptions on each side that read: 'To the glory of God and in memory of those from this borough who fell in the war 1914-18, their name liveth forever more'. The names of the men who died are inscribed on the base. The monument stands on a low square plinth with rounded corners, which has an inscription across the front.

It is enclosed by iron railings at the front and sides, and a curved stone wall at the rear. The cast iron railings feature heavy plain uprights and additional rails beneath the top rail and above the bottom rail, with square newel posts topped with domed finials. The rails are dentilled where they curve around the newel posts, and there are single gates on the north and south sides. The railings are set on a low pecked stone plinth. The rear curved wall is constructed of snecked red sandstone with square end piers. Embedded in the wall are three granite tablets, with the left and right tablets dedicated to those who died in World War II (1939-45), and the central tablet commemorating a soldier who died in the Falklands Campaign in 1982. The enclosure features a slate floor.
