Description
The former mill at Melin-y-Wern is a rectangular two-and-a-half storey structure built from limestone rubble, topped with a modern tiled roof. Visible on all walls are 19th-century iron ties. The front gable features a wide segmentally-arched entrance with a recessed, pegged, and chamfered oak frame, complemented by a brick tympanum. The entrance is fitted with wide sliding doors that are boarded and partly studded, displaying various graffiti. At the apex of the gable is a circular oculus with an original wooden frame.
On the west side, there is a wide segmental recess to the left, which includes a primary entrance with a boarded door and a pegged, chamfered frame. The right side shows disturbed masonry, likely from a former window. Adjacent to this is a large sloping buttress made of limestone rubble, probably added in the 19th century. To the right, a wooden framed window features later brick infill within a segmentally-arched opening, and there is a modern oak lintel above a square opening. At the far right, a low segmental arch leads to the former mill race and wheel pit.
The rear gable has a round-arched entrance with modern boarding, and above it are two plain openings, one for each of the first and attic floors. The east side is positioned against the bank of the adjacent mill pond. To the left, a flat wooden lintel marks the former mill race entrance, with a segmental relieving arch above. The centre has a segmental window opening, and to the ground beyond is a further framed and boarded window, with modern wooden boarding throughout. At the far right, a stone 'bridge' connects the bank to a first-floor entrance featuring a boarded, framed door.
In front of the entrance gable are two pairs of mill stones. The mill has a three-bay modern roof with retained queen strut trusses, although the floors have been removed. Inside, a large internal overshot iron water wheel, approximately 3 meters in diameter, along with an adjacent cogged wheel, remain in situ, and the floor is partly slate-flagged.
