Description

The Druids is a house of mixed dates, with the western wing potentially representing the earliest part, although it was raised to two full storeys in the 19th century. The main range of the house faces east, with a short rear wing to the north linking it to the older western wing and containing the main entrance and stair hall. An angled southern wing is set back. The building is constructed of rough rubble, mainly rendered and covered with slate roofs.

The western wing was built in two phases, with a two-window range joining the later main range. It has a former doorway to the right and two 12-pane sash windows with margin lights on each floor, with a 16-pane sash window to each floor in the separate right-hand section. The main entrance is within a porch featuring marble columns and a timber cornice with modillion detail, likely added around 1950, located in the short rear wing of the main range. Above the doorway is an 8-pane sash window with margin lights. The garden front (facing east) is a three-window range with margin-light sashes on each floor. A veranda with fluted cast iron columns and scrolled brackets was probably added in the 20th century. A parallel range set back to the rear forms a rear wing of the earlier western wing, and two shorter parallel gables project from the western wing. These also have 12-pane sashes with margin lights and some later openings. A balcony giving access to an upper doorway was added around 1950.

A lower wing to the south may have originated as outbuildings. It has a long two-window range with a doorway towards the right in its eastern elevation. The north elevation features a central doorway and iron lattice glazing in the right-hand window, as well as in gabled dormers.

The western wing has a large lateral chimney, possibly indicating its early date. Most of the internal joinery and other fittings, including fireplaces, are not original to the house.
