Description

The gatepiers and associated forecourt walls at Plas-yn-Llan are tall, square structures dating from the early 18th century. The gatepiers stand approximately 2.5 meters high, including their bust finials, and are made of tooled sandstone. Each pier features fielded panels on all sides, with moulded bases and coved cornices. At the top of each pier is a contemporary sandstone bust depicting a blackamoor's head, which is the crest of the Conway family, both of which have been renewed with polychromy. Modern decorative iron half-gates are present, and the fittings for the original wooden gates remain.

The flanking sections of the wall are nearly contemporary and are built against the panelled faces of the piers, suggesting that the piers were originally intended to be free-standing or paired with fencing or hedging. These rubble walls rise to a maximum height of 1.2 meters and extend in 5-meter sections on either side of the piers. The southern section retains shallow-moulded sandstone copings of early 18th-century style, although they appear to have been reset. The northern section has a small portion of similar copings. The walls curve back towards the house on both sides, enclosing a square forecourt. A modern gate is located at the southwest corner, while there is an opening at the southeast corner.
