Description
The lychgate at the Church of St Mary, dating from the early 18th century, features a gabled design made of rubble with a renewed slated roof. It has oak lintels above plain openings on the east and west sides, with the east opening being wider. The structure includes a pegged oak frame and 20th-century gates on the west side. On the south face at ground level, there is a stone inscribed with the date 1728 and the initials of the churchwardens: KR, TP, and TR.
Surrounding the lychgate are rubble churchyard walls that are uncoped and vary in height. These walls contain several squared red sandstone blocks, likely re-used Roman materials from the site. In the northwest corner, there is a former bierhouse, also constructed of rubble and slate, with gabled ends facing east and west; it has a plain opening to the west that features modern horizontal boarding. In the southwest corner, there is a small store built in the same style, with a plain boarded door on the churchyard side.
