Description
Maes-y-Castell is a storied house constructed of rubble with some decorative timber framing, featuring slate roofs and plain two-stage chimneys. The building is designed in an L-shape, comprising a west range that serves as the entrance and a north cross-wing. The west range includes a two-storey gabled porch with an inset sandstone plaque displaying the arms of the Williams family along with the initials EW and GW, representing Edward and Grace Williams. Attached to the south of the cross-wing is a large single-storey modern porch.
On the garden side of the cross-wing, there are two three-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor, flanking an entrance with a modern door. To the right on the first floor, there is a cross-window, and to the left, a jettied timber-framed section with close-studding, along with two additional cross-windows. Most of the other openings in the building are modern.
Inside, the ground floor of the west range features a high-quality three-bay beamed ceiling, which originally served as one room, likely the hall, though it has since been partitioned into two rooms. The main and secondary beams and joists are finely moulded, and some relocated panelling remains on both the ground and first floors.
