Description

The Coach-house and Stable Range at Kinmel is a Grade II* listed building in a classical style, constructed from ashlar sandstone with slate roofs. It consists of one storey and an attic, arranged around a central courtyard, with wings at the northeast and southwest. The main elevation facing north features a central portico with a clock tower and three bay side wings that end in two-storey pavilions.

The central block resembles a triumphal arch, flanked by paired Tuscan columns with alternating plain and vermiculated drums, which frame the arched opening to the internal yard. The voussoirs of the arch are also alternately plain and vermiculated. Above the entablature is a cubic clock stage with end pilasters and ball finials, leading to a square upper stage beneath a rusticated bell tower that features side volutes and a square dome. The side bays are channel rusticated, with paired metal windows set in stonework-filled arches and rusticated keystones. The attic contains three dormers with pediments and side volutes, featuring sash windows. The Palladian proportioned end pavilions continue the channel rustication of the wings, with the upper stage showcasing an arch-headed window topped with a triangular pediment on brackets.

The building is elevated above two walled terraces, each approximately 1.5 meters high, made of sandstone ashlar. A pair of crouching lions flank the central flight of steps on the lower terrace. On the eastern side of the lower terrace, a pilastered arch with a mask keystone and arms within the pediment opens to a curving walk lined with rhododendrons that leads up to the Broad Walk. The connecting balustrade has been dismantled.

At the time of inspection, the building was not accessible and has been used for meetings and classrooms.
