Description

The Church of St George is an Early Gothic "lancet" style building, likely dating to the 13th or 14th century. It is constructed of grey stone with slate roofs. The church comprises a nave, chancel, transepts, and a saddleback-roofed west tower. The tower has a clock and a parapet with a dentil course, featuring paired, thin, lancet-headed belfry openings in arcading on each wall. On the ground floor of the tower, single-light lancet windows are present on each side wall, while the front wall has a round-headed doorway with deep reveals and a triangular dripstone. The nave consists of four bays, each with a single lancet window. Gabled buttresses are present. The chancel has an east window of three lancets, set high up, while the transepts also feature triple lancets and single lancet windows in their side walls. To the southeast is a lean-to-roofed vestry with a gable, and to the northeast of the northern transept there’s a single-story 19th-century wing, possibly a schoolroom, constructed with a different stone pattern and featuring a simple triple lancet window in plain reveals on its southwest wall.

The interior is spacious, with an arch-braced and queen post roof to the nave and a boarded dado. Massive, plain, chamfered arches lead to the chancel and transepts. A gallery at the west end of the nave is supported by octagonal posts with a panelled front. The chancel has a tiled floor and low iron communion rails. Behind the communion table are panels displaying the Lord’s Prayer, Creed, and Ten Commandments in Welsh, flanked by depictions of St Peter and St Paul. The church contains good stained glass, including the east window depicting Christ in Majesty with the 12 Apostles. Three windows in the north transept are dedicated to St George (in memory of J A Walker, who died in 1916), St John the Evangelist, and the Good Shepherd. The north and south transept side windows depict St John the Evangelist, the Good Shepherd, Faith, Hope, and Charity respectively.
