Description
The Old Dairy Farm at Plas-y Bryn Farm is a freestanding, one-room octagonal dairy, built with walls approximately seven feet high made of squared granite blocks featuring large corner stones and snecked infilling. It has an unusual double roof construction, consisting of a pyramidal slated roof over the stone walls, with a larger independent slated roof structure above. This upper roof extends beyond the main structure, creating a continuous verandah supported at the corners by simple timber posts with braces. At the top, an octagonal timber louvred ventilator shaft rises through the lower roof and above the upper roof, topped with a small pyramidal slated roof and a cast iron finial at the apex. All slate roofs include slate wings at the hips. The north entrance features a vertically boarded door with a cast iron hit-and-miss ventilator in the center. There are also four-light timber windows with granite sills on the northwest and northeast sides.
Inside, the dairy has slate floor slabs and slate worktops. The ventilator shaft can be opened or closed using two flaps operated from inside the dairy.
