Description

Nos 1 and 2 Ty Newydd are a pair of estate cottages built in the third quarter of the 19th century. They are one-and-a-half storeys tall and were constructed for Lord Penrhyn after he acquired the estate in 1856. The cottages are made of rubble with cambered heads over the ground floor openings. They feature a continuous slate roof with a tiled ridge and deep verges. Both cottages share central and gable end chimneys, which are tall and have moulded cornices, cappings, and weathercoursing.

The design of the cottages is double-fronted and they are reflected pairs, although the northern unit (No 1) is slightly longer due to remodelling. Each cottage has a half-glazed door at the central entrance, with modern open lean-to porches that have slate roofs. Flanking the entrances are modern casement windows with two panes and projecting sills, along with tall slit-like outer windows. Above each porch, there is a two-pane casement window under the eaves, with similar flanking windows that slightly break the eaves and are contained within mid-20th century flat-roofed dormers. These dormers and the windows are alterations; the original windows, like those above the porch, would have been positioned under the eaves, as can still be seen on No 2. At the rear, each unit has modern extensions and additional flat-roofed dormers.
