Description
Helyg is a climbing club hut built in the 20th century, featuring an 'H'-shaped plan with two north-south gabled wings and a central entrance section. The structure is made of roughly squared and coursed rubble stone, with slate roofs, stone stacks, coping, and kneelers on the later part. It has modern windows.
The entrance is located on the south side of the linking section, with a door flanked by glazing. The south gable of the west wing, which is the extension added in 1933, projects forward to the left and includes a central window and a rooflight on its eastern slope. The west elevation has two windows offset to the left, a stack on the north gable, and one rooflight in both the northeast roof of the west wing and the north slope of the linking section. The original cottage to the east has a doorway and a stack on the north gable, a single small window on the east elevation, and two rooflights. The south gable end features a central window in what was the original doorway, with a plaque above it commemorating improvements made in 1986 in memory of E Stuart Chantrell, the honorary custodian from 1928 to 1957, and to the generosity of HRC Carr from 1925 to 1986.
Inside, the entrance leads to a hallway with modern stairs and a small shower room beneath the stairs. The loft above contains WCs. The west wing, built in 1933, includes a bunk room and a lounge to the left, featuring queen post roof trusses. The southern half is divided into bunks, separated from the lounge by a tongue and groove screen. The lounge has a fireplace in the north wall with a stone surround, a corbelled slate mantle, and a curved slate hearth. Above the fireplace is a timber plaque commemorating Everest expeditions from 1921 to 1953, listing the names of Climbers' Club members, with "Everest" in relief and the club logo above. There are cupboards in the recesses beside the fireplace, which at the time of inspection contained Climbers' Club memorabilia. The original cottage to the right of the entrance hall contains the kitchen, with ladder access to a boarded loft in the southern part. Although some details have been altered, the overall plan and layout have been retained.
