Description
The lychgate at St Machreth's Church is a gabled structure made of rubble with a slate roof, featuring a rough-dressed south face. It has segmental arched openings on both the south and north sides, and built-in benches with wooden seats on the west and east inner sides. The interior is lime-rendered with a cobbled floor.
On either side of the north opening, which faces the church, there are two inscribed slate plaques with arched tops. These plaques bear dedication inscriptions by Sir Robert Williames Vaughan, dated 1820, with the left plaque in English and the right in Welsh. These plaques are ex-situ and likely originally occupied the arched niches of the church tower.
Four cobbled steps lead from the lychgate up towards the church, while fourteen similar steps descend towards the road. These steps are flanked by splayed rubble retaining walls that meet at the road. A plain modern wooden gate is located on the south side of the lychgate.
