Description

Caban Cader Idris is a school building from the 19th century, constructed from quarry-dressed rubble and featuring medium-pitched slate roofs with deep eaves and verges, as well as plain bargeboards on the gables. The building has a T-shaped layout, gabled to the north and west. The western arm of the T has a gabled bellcote, which includes moulded kneelers, capping, and a pointed bell-arch made of dressed limestone. It is topped with conical tin louvres on the three roof sections and decorative iron finials at the gable apexes. There are entrances to the right and at the north return of the projecting wing to the west, featuring Tudor-arched tall, recessed boarded doors with plain fanlights, accessed by stepped pathways and stopped-chamfered doorcases. The windows are also Tudor-arched, with slate sills; there are two 2-pane windows at the front and two 4-pane windows at the rear, all with simple, wide Y-tracery heads in timber. The gable ends have large pointed-arched windows with three lancets and oculi in wooden plate tracery. At the rear, there is another entrance similar to the others, accompanied by a large steel-framed window to the right, which is a later addition.

Adjoining to the right is the School Master's House, known as Ty'r Ysgol, which is stepped up and L-shaped, built with similar materials and detailing. It has entrances at the rear and on the south side, the latter accessed via a 20th-century single-storey porch. The house features a 4-panelled door with stopped-chamfered detailing. The main front has narrow 2-pane sash windows in the left bay with cambered heads and slate sills. The roof is half-hipped, with weather coursing at the intersection with the school block. The advanced gabled section to the right includes a slightly projecting lateral chimney on the north face, plain banding, and a cornice. The gable face has larger 4-pane sashes, and a slate plaque inscribed with the date 1876 is located at the apex. There is an additional stack at the rear section, which has a hipped roof facing south.

The interior is plain, featuring contemporary 4-panel doors and a simple dog-leg staircase with a plain newel post, rail, and balusters.
