Description
Bwlch-Iocyn is a late 17th-century farmhouse that has flush 18th and 19th-century extensions at both ends, creating the appearance of a very long house. It was raised in the second quarter of the 19th century and has further additions from the mid-20th century.
The exterior features a two-storey structure made of whitened rubble with a shallow-pitched slate roof. The central section has squat end chimneys with weather-coursing and slate cornices, and a boulder plinth. There is an off-centre entrance to the right, which includes a 20th-century pegged oak doorcase and a recessed 18th-century studded oak door that was brought in from another location. To the right, there is a 16-pane recessed sash window from the second quarter of the 19th century with a projecting slate cill, while to the left, there is a smaller, later 6-pane sash window. The upper floor has three additional 6-pane sashes. The right section features a recessed sliding sash window, and the left section has two tall 20th-century 24-pane cross-windows, along with a small recessed 19th-century 6-pane fixed window to the right. There are rubble-parapeted steps to the left, likely from the 19th century, leading to a raised terrace at the left gable. At the rear, there is a long 19th-century catslide outshut with a central 20th-century glazed door and plain flanking 4-pane windows, as well as further tripartite windows. Off-centre to the left, there is a large attic dormer with tripartite glazing and a hipped roof, along with additional 20th-century windows and a lean-to extension to the left.
Inside, the main hall features a rough beamed ceiling and a slate-flagged floor, with a fireplace to the right that has a chamfered bressummer. To the left of the hall, leading up from it, is a fine half-well staircase from the second quarter of the 17th century, featuring oak newel posts with geometric finials, a moulded rail, and shaped and carved flat balusters. This staircase was brought in during the 20th century and fitted around the original stone steps, which are in two flights. A 17th-century studded external door leads from the hall to the left room, which has also been brought in. This room is open to the roof and features a single pegged collar truss, and it was formerly a byre. There is a small dining room at the rear of the hall with 19th-century panelling and large-field mid-18th-century doors, all of which were brought in. The right section of the house is full-height and has a plaster barrel-vault.
Overall, Bwlch-Iocyn is a 17th-century farmhouse with interesting later additions and alterations.
