Description

Cwm Bowydd Farmhouse is a late 17th century farmhouse that was extended in the mid-19th century while part of the Newborough estate. It has also been used as a surgery earlier this century.

The exterior features a two-storey rubble construction with slate roofs and an irregular plan. The farmhouse has a projecting right-hand cross-range and rear and side extensions added to the main rectangular block. The original block has a central entrance flanked by windows and is now a three-window range with 19th-century 16-pane sash windows on both floors. There are plain end chimneys with weather-coursing. The current entrance is located to the right of this range, in the angle formed by the projecting T-shaped cross-wing, and features a modern extruded porch with upper glazing and a modern door. The cross-wing has 12-pane sash windows. To the left of the primary block is a plain byre extension that is stepped down and flush with the facade. At the rear, there is a further gabled and storied extension with modern windows and external stepped access to an upper entrance on the right return. A similar upper stepped access leads to another upper entrance on the right side of the rear of the main range, both of which have boarded doors. The left gable end features a modern stable door with flanking modern windows.

Inside, the farmhouse has slate flagged floors and chamfered ceiling beams in the rear rooms of the main block. There is a large inglebeam in the former hall, which is partly obscured, and a built-in mid-19th century settle in the rear extension.

Overall, Cwm Bowydd Farmhouse is a vernacular farmhouse with 17th-century origins that retains much of its original historic character.
