Description
Dolgellau Primary School is a single storey school building designed in a long gabled range with outer wings that lean forward. The structure is built from snecked rubble masonry with red sandstone dressings. It features steeply pitched slate roofs with oversailing eaves, deep verges, and bargeboards. Angular stone stacks are set on square bases, although those at the outer ends have been removed.
The building has an advanced gabled centre bay with raking gable parapets supported by kneelers and topped with a finial. A large 20-pane mullioned and transomed window is located here, along with a segmental pediment that bears a Welsh motto, although the centre of the pediment is missing. Flanking the centre bay are two 9-pane mullioned and transomed windows raised into gablets, each with gable parapets and kneelers. Between these, there are two transomed single light windows.
Porches are positioned at angles where the outer wings come forward, featuring parapets with ball finials. The doorways are designed in a Tudor style, with decorated spandrels beneath the lettering: "GENETHOD" on the left porch and "BECHGYN" on the right. Each porch has radial fanlights above half-glazed inner double doors. The outer wings also contain two transomed single light windows and 9-pane mullioned end transomed windows on the end elevations.
At the rear, there are three cross ranges with lateral stacks on the central range and 3-light transomed windows. The rear yard is enclosed by outbuildings and a screen wall that features a Tudor archway and crow-stepped gables.
In front of the school, there is a retaining wall made of rubble with square piers and contemporary ball-pointed railings. The front yards are bounded by rubble walls with piers that rise to support ball-pointed railings with dogbars.
