Description

The Midland Bank is a 2-storey and attic building designed in the Queen Anne Revival style, constructed from red brick with freestone dressings. The exterior features include decorative banding, quoins, a stringcourse, architraves, keystones, and a wide bracket cornice beneath a partially balustraded parapet. The roof is slate, topped with a red brick chimney stack.

The building has a two-window facade on both sides, with a set-back corner over the porch. The first floor is adorned with 12-pane sash windows, while the banking hall below features round arched windows with lugged architraves and marginal glazing bars. The attic facing High Street also has small pane sash windows and an implied broken semicircular pediment from which the chimney stack rises, flanked by pilasters. A small pane window at the corner has a Gibbsian surround and opens onto a balcony with a balustraded parapet that is bracketed out to the front.

The porch below boasts a deep shell hood with an egg and dart cornice and panelled reveals, leading to a panelled bank door. On the right side facing Penlan Street, the cornice rises in a broad segmental arch over a small pane sash attic window, which is complemented by a concave-sided iron railed balcony. The balcony features Ionic-derived capitals on the pier and end pilasters, while the ground floor steps out in a broad splayed bay. There is also a small single-storey range to the right, which has a balustraded parapet.

Internally, some classical details have been retained, such as swags on the front window splay and an egg and dart moulded aedicule.
