Description

The Former Tabernacle Chapel, which includes the Hall (Cwmni Theatr Hwyl a Fflag), is an aisled chapel located to the south, featuring transepts and a tower at its north end, with a lower hall range connected beyond that. The building is constructed of snecked rubble masonry, accented with pink freestone window surrounds and gable parapets, and topped with slate roofs and various stepped buttresses.

The chapel's range includes ogee-headed two-light windows and a gabled porch at the left end, which has Perpendicular mouldings around the doorway. A crucifix finial adorns the south end gable, with stepped windows below that feature traceried heads and linked arches—semicircular in the center and segmental on the sides. The entrance is elliptical, heavily moulded, and has a deep splay. The gabled transepts include one at the front with paired two-light transomed windows, a pyramidal roof, and chamfered and ramped corners. The rectangular bell tower has a stepped and gabled parapet with a finial, and a semi-octagonal vice tower on the east side with a pyramidal roof.

The hall has a high roof with a hipped left end, detached from the tower, and features small pane casement windows. Below, there is a broad lean-to with camber-headed openings, three-light windows, and an entrance on the left where it connects to the east transept. The north gable end has paired three-light windows.

Inside, the chapel features a five-bay interior made of Ruabon brick, with a semicircular arched arcade supported by octagonal stone piers. Brick arches span the aisles, which are partly closed at the west side. The ceiling has arched trusses and is boarded, with a gallery at the south end and a pointed arch at the north end over the former platform. There is some Gothic and Tudor panelling in the former choir gallery, and the ‘chapter house’ range has roof timbers radiating from a central pendant.
