Description
Cilgant is a terrace of village cottages built in the 19th century. It consists of a single-storey range of cottages numbered 2 to 4, flanked by two-storey gable-fronted cottages at each end, numbered 1 and 5. The entire terrace follows the curve of the village street. The cottages are constructed from roughly coursed rubblestone, featuring reddish brown brick window dressings, dripmoulds over slate lintels, and door arches, topped with a slate roof.
The front of the terrace has eight windows, including those at the ends. The central range has pairs of windows alternating with three segmental-headed entrances, along with additional windows to the left and right of the entrances. All windows are now 20th-century replacements but are set in their original openings with dripmoulds. The doors are recessed and half-glazed. The end cottages have similar windows, but the ground floor windows are larger, and there are 20th-century half-glazed doors on the inner returns.
Prominent features include four reddish brown brick ridge stacks with toothed paired and rebated shafts, moulded capping, and a collection of mainly yellow chimney pots, with two stacks on the central range and one on each end cottage. There are various 20th-century additions at the rear, including raking and box dormers on the central range. The left end cottage, No. 1, is now painted, with stonework on the left return and render over the front. The interior was not inspected at the time of the survey.
