Description

Capel Peniel, a chapel with an adjoining manse and forecourt railings, was built in the 19th century, with additions in 1866. The chapel is constructed of coursed rubble with a slate roof. The wide gabled front has a slightly recessed central archway containing two tall, narrow, round-headed windows with 12 panes of timber with intersecting glazing bars. Above the archway is a circular slate panel inscribed with the name "PENIEL" and the date 1866. To either side of the arch are framed and boarded doors, each with a round-headed fanlight featuring Regency Gothic detail. Projecting bargeboards are fixed to four projecting purlins on each side. The side elevation has five similar round-headed windows with prominent keystones. The rear of the chapel is rendered, and the windows have been replaced.

Attached to the right is the chapel house, built of irregular rubble stonework with a slated roof. It is two storeys high with three closely spaced windows. A part-glazed door is centrally located, and the windows are modern uPVC.

A generous gravelled forecourt slopes down from the chapel and is enclosed by trefoil-headed cast iron railings set on low stone walls. At the lower end of the forecourt are three slender stone piers with large caps.

The interior of the chapel is plain, with plastered walls, a boarded dado, and a boarded ceiling that is coved around the perimeter. A pulpit is positioned between the entrance door lobbies and is housed within a gallery topped with a set fawr, raised over steps. The pews are arranged in four banks, with 18 places across each, creating two aisles. A clock by John Edwards of Llanbedrog, dated 1903, and a brass memorial commemorating 1914-1918 are also present.
