Description

The Midland Bank is a building featuring dressed sandstone on the ground floor and first-floor gables, with the first floor constructed from snecked rubble. It has a shallow pitched slate roof with plain flanking stacks, one of which is rendered and abuts the neighboring stack.

The ground floor consists of three bays, with the entrance bay located on the right. Each bay is separated by rusticated pilasters. The entrance is large and pedimented, supported by scrolled brackets that rest on vertically-panelled pilasters. The moulded architrave above the door continues into an arched tympanum, which has a projecting acanthus keystone. This tympanum was formerly carved with the word 'BANK' and was later modified to hold a metal plaque that has since been removed. The entrance features large panelled double doors, each with three raised panels, with the central panels being very narrow. To the left of the entrance bay are two large arched windows, which have moulded reveals and keystones, similar to the entrance. The windows are multi-pane glazed. The frieze has Vitruvian scroll decoration, with a plain fascia and a simply-moulded cornice.

On the first floor, there is a central near-flush 6-pane sash window located under the eaves, with moulded reveals. Flanking this window are two pedimented dormers that break the eaves, each containing 12-pane sashes. The upper gables and cills of these dormers are made of dressed sandstone.

Inside, the building retains its original banking hall, which features mahogany counters and dado panelling, along with a high ceiling adorned with a fine dentilated plaster cornice.
