Description

Pandy Newydd is a former rectory built in a simple high Victorian Gothic style. It features a two-storey and attic double-depth plan with parallel gable-ended ranges separated by a valley. The exterior is made of regularly coursed and dressed rubblestone blocks with tooled ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs that have coped verges on carved kneelers.

The entrance range is symmetrical, consisting of five bays with the central bays forming a full-height gabled break. The first-floor windows are mullioned and transomed, with those in the gable featuring a simple dripmould. There is a two-light mullion window in the attic of the gable and five-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor. The round-headed entrance arch in the gable contains an inner panelled door. On the left side of the entrance range, there is an external lateral stack with twin shafts, while the return wall of the parallel range has a three-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor, a cross-window on the first floor, and a tall narrow ventilation slit in the attic. A datestone marked "1865" is located at the junction between the ranges, although it was concealed by creeper at the time of the survey.

Inside, the rectory remains virtually unaltered from the high Victorian period, featuring an encaustic tile floor in the hall, four-panel doors, and panelled window shutters throughout. The principal ground-floor rooms have original moulded ceiling cornices and fireplaces, while the first floor has small cast-iron grates in simple slate surrounds. The staircase is impressive, adorned with spiked pyramidal finials on the carved newels.
