Description
Melin Geirn is a tall 18th-century windmill tower that stands five storeys high. It is constructed from mortared rubble masonry, which was formerly rendered. The mill features a ground floor doorway on the northwest side, with opposing doorways on the northwest and southeast sides at the second floor or gallery stage. There is also a square-headed window opening at the first floor level. The doorways are topped with stone lintels, and the left side of the ground floor doorway is now supported by a brick pier.
Attached to the northeast side of the tower is an agricultural range that runs northwest to southeast. This includes a lofted granary and a threshing barn located directly next to the base of the tower. The range continues with a lofted cowhouse to the southeast and single-storey stable ranges at the northwest end, positioned at right angles to the rear. These ranges are built of rubble masonry and feature cambered brick heads above the openings. The roofs are heavily grouted slate, while the threshing barn has a modern profiled replacement roof.
The opposing doorways to the threshing barn are located to the southeast of the windmill tower, with the lofted granary on the left having a doorway on the left and a small window to the right, along with a first-floor window situated between the two. The single-storey stable range at the left end has a doorway offset to the right end and a blocked window to its left. The range at the rear has alternating door and window openings on the left, with three doors and windows to the right, and a doorway at the right end flanked by windows, although the right-hand window is now blocked.
Inside the tower, some timbers remain at the second floor level, but it is currently used as an animal pen. The rear wall of the tower is visible within the threshing barn, but there appears to be no internal access or drive shafts remaining.
