Description
The agricultural range at Tre-Ddafydd-uchaf, also known as Tre-Ddafydd-fawr, is a Grade II listed structure that includes cowhouses, a corn barn, stables, and hammels. The central range is oriented north-south, featuring a barn at the center and a cowhouse at the south end that extends east. To the north of the barn, the hammels extend west, creating a right-angled Z-plan layout.
This well-constructed range has rubble walls with contrasting limestone dressings. The openings feature segmental brick heads with a dripcourse, and the roof is hipped and covered with slate. The southern range consists of three cowhouses: two with two bays and one with one bay. The two units on the left (east) are windowless and have square high-level ventilation openings. The two-bay cowhouse on the right has a central door flanked by windows. At the southwest angle, forming the southern end of the central range, is a four-bay cowhouse with a central door and windows on either side.
In the center of the range is a taller three-bay corn barn, which has tall opposite doors that are asymmetrically placed to the left, along with three tall vent slits to the left and four to the right, all featuring limestone architraves. North of the corn barn are two stables, one with two bays and the other with four bays, each having a door flanked by windows. The larger stable on the right includes a third window, likely serving as a tack room.
At the northern end of the central range is a two-bay cartshed, with each bay featuring a shallow brick basket arch and a dripcourse, supported by a central squared limestone pier. The hammel range extends to the west and consists of a long structure with nine open bays facing a former hammel yard to the south, although all but two of the bays have been infilled or partly infilled with rubble. The shallow basket arches are made of dressed limestone, with projecting keystones and a dripcourse, and there is a central feed room with a single narrow door providing access to the rear (north) elevation.
The roof trusses throughout the building are sawn and bolted collared trusses.
