Description
Uwch y Don is an asymmetrically arranged 2-storey house with a single-storey service wing at the northeast end. It is constructed from local stone, featuring pebbledash rendered elevations and freestone dressings. The roof is made of green Devon slate with red clay ridge tiles and stone gable parapets, complemented by slender, rectangular, rendered axial and end wall stacks. The projecting verges are supported by scrolled brackets.
The entrance elevation faces southeast towards the road and features an advanced central gabled bay with a gable parapet and ball finials. The doorway is offset to the left, sheltered by a stone hood, with a window directly to its right and a porthole window with a keystone to the right. On the first floor, there is a stair window with 4 mullioned lights. To the right of the advanced bay, there are 4 ground floor and 3 first floor windows, all of which are small paned single lights. To the left, there is a rectangular ground floor bay window that spans the southwest corner of the house. The windows in the bay, as well as the rest of the house, are top-hung casements with 6 or 8-paned lights above 1 or 2-paned fixed lights below. The rear elevation consists of 3 bays, featuring a canted bay window on the ground floor right, dormer gables over the offset central bay and to the right, with paired windows on the ground floor and first floor in the wider right-hand bay, all having small upper panes.
Inside, the porch has a studded timber door and a mosaic floor. The inner door opens into a central hall from which the principal rooms lead off, along with a corridor to the domestic quarters and servants' stairs to the right. The hallway is highlighted by the floriate Art Nouveau glass in the stair windows and the doors to the entrance and cloakroom. There is a dog-leg stairway with a half-landing, featuring a moulded wreathed handrail over shaped balusters and newel posts. The house retains panelled doors, window reveals, and soffits, with many rooms showcasing moulding coving, dado, and picture rails. The ground floor pantries still have the original cupboards, and the maid's pantry includes sliding panelled doors.
