Description
70 New Street is a three-storey, two-bay house built in the late Georgian style. The front is finished with a whitened, roughly textured render, topped by a slate roof with a roughcast chimney stack on the left side. The entrance, located in the right-hand bay, features a panelled door with the top four panels being moulded, and a small four-pane window above it. The door is framed by thin, chamfered posts which support a shallow canopy; this canopy was originally part of a porch. Windows on the lower and middle floors are hornless sashes with twelve panes each, while the upper floor has shorter sash windows with nine panes.
The rear elevation includes an original wing and more recent extensions, although original windows are preserved on the right side. These retained windows are hornless sashes with twelve panes on the lower and middle floors, and six-pane sash windows on the upper floor.
The original layout, which included a double-depth plan with an entrance hall, stair hall, and two rooms, has been modified. These rooms have now been combined into a single space, with the staircase partitioned off. The original rear room maintains a large fireplace with freestone jambs and a timber lintel. The open-well staircase has replacement balusters.
