Description
This is a neo-classical chapel with a later schoolroom, built in an urban setting. The chapel was erected in 1826 and enlarged in 1861, while the schoolroom dates to the early 20th century.
The chapel is a three-bay building with stucco rendering and a slate roof. Its symmetrical front elevation features slightly advanced outer bays with tall windows flanked by engaged Tuscan pilasters, moulded sill bands, and moulded cornices that continue as a moulded open gable pediment. The windows have moulded round arched heads with keystones on engaged Tuscan pilasters. The central doorway has panelled double doors, above which is a tripartite window. A rusticated arch with keystone is within the open pediment, bearing a plaque reading: CARMEL / INDEPENDENT CHAPEL / ERECTED 1826 / ENLARGED 1861. The chapel's west lateral wall has irregularly spaced 16-pane sash windows within round headed frames.
The schoolroom is a linear range set at an angle to the chapel, with a taller gabled hall forming a crosswing to its left end. It has rendered elevations and a slate roof with clay ridge tiles. A tall brick axial stack is located to the left. Shaped gable parapets feature stone coping along the full-height gable entrance to the hall on the far left, with two smaller gables to its right; the right-hand bay incorporates a splayed vestibule. The main entrance is at the far left end, leading to a hall set at a right angle to the rest of the range. This entrance is flanked by narrow, small-paned lights and recessed between engaged pilasters with a moulded cornice. A large, semi-circular, small-paned window is above the cornice, within a keyed moulded arch. A timber portico covers the doorway. The return elevation has four small-paned casement windows. A second entrance is located through a camber headed doorway, with a hoodmould, to the splayed vestibule at the right end of the range. Narrow, small-paned lights flank this entrance, one to the right and two to the left. Paired, small-paned windows are present in each of the gabled bays.
The interior of the chapel was not inspected during the survey.
