Description

The Road Bridge over the River Wye is a Grade I listed iron road bridge. It features a graceful design with five spans: two measuring 10 meters, two at 21 meters, and a central span of 34 meters. The carriageway is 3 meters wide, flanked by 1-meter footways. The bridge is constructed with cast metal arches supported by struts that are 5 deep, all braced together on high, long, and narrow piers made of coursed roughly dressed sandstone. The parapet consists of closely set slender open railings that include decorative scrollwork panels, which display the date "Anno Domini 1816" along with the names "Monmouth" and "Gloucester." The scrollwork also supports lamps. The abutments are made of ashlar, featuring bands at both the road and pier levels.
