Description
St Cuthbert's Church is an earlier 16th-century building of Late Gothic design, originally oblong in shape. The church is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar detailing. The north wall has been demolished, and the church is now roofless. A belfry, dating from the 17th century, is present. The windows are round-headed. The interior is divided into burial enclosures, belonging to the Hares of Calder Hall and Blairlogie in Stirlingshire, and the Wilkies of Ormiston. The church is now a ruin.
East Calder (previously Calder-Clere) was separated from Cald Comitis (Mid and West Calder) in 1641, and this church subsequently served as the Parish Kirk. Following the union of the parish with Kirknewton in 1751, the church fell into neglect.
