Description
This is a group value building: a single-story terrace of two (originally four) labourers' cottages built in 1907 in the Arts and Crafts style. The terrace is arranged in a U-shape, with service extensions to the rear. The walls are harled, incorporating a grid pattern of timber framing, and accommodate single, bipartite, and tripartite windows. The cottages have bargeboarded doors.
The west (entrance) elevation has six recessed bays, with the four central bays slightly advanced. Two tripartite windows are positioned centrally, with single windows to the right and left. Doors are situated on both inner returns. Three advanced bays of wings flank the center; the left wing’s timber framing is inscribed “HMC 1907”. Each wing features a bipartite window flanked by single windows, with doors in the re-entrant angles.
The side elevations each feature three bays, with a small window centrally positioned and a bipartite window on either side.
The rear elevation has an advanced bay to the center, with a door to the right and a window to the left. Three recessed bays flank this center, each with a small window centrally placed between bipartite windows. Advanced service blocks extend from the outer bays, with modern flat-roofed extensions now abutting these blocks.
The windows are timber, multi-pane casements, nearly flush with the wall. The roof is covered in grey/green slate, with a jerkin head to the advanced pavilions, red ridge tiles, and rendered stacks.
The initials "HMC" refer to Henry Moubray Cadell of Grange, who commissioned the cottages on his estate. A note indicating a building cost of $740 is also present.
