Description

Sw Cottage is part of a group of two (originally four) labourers’ cottages built in 1907 in the Arts and Crafts style. The terrace is arranged in a U-shape, with service areas at the rear. The cottages are harled with a grid pattern of timber framing, incorporating single, bipartite, and tripartite windows. They have bargeboarded and boarded front doors.

The west-facing elevation has six recessed bays, with the four central bays slightly projecting. Two tripartite windows are centrally placed, with single windows to the right and left. There are doors on the inner returns. Three projecting bays, one on each wing, flank the central section; the left wing’s timber framing is inscribed with “HMC 1907”. Each projecting bay has a bipartite window flanked by single windows, and doors are located in the re-entrant angles.

The side elevations have three bays, each with a small window to the centre, flanked by bipartite windows.

The rear elevation features a projecting bay in the centre, with a door to the right and a window to the left. Three recessed bays flank this central section, each with a small window to the centre, flanked by bipartite windows. Advanced service blocks are located at the outer bays, with modern flat-roofed extensions added abutting these.

The windows are timber, multi-pane casements, almost flush with the wall. The roof is grey/green slate, with jerkin-headed pavilions and red ridge tiles. Rendered stacks are present.

The initials "HMC" refer to Henry Moubray Cadell of Grange, who commissioned the cottages on his estate. The design includes a note of the building cost - $740.
