Description

The Hope Monument is an octagonal, staged Gothic monumental tower dated 1859. It features buttresses to the first stage, canopied niches to the second stage, and wolf-like gargoyles to the first-stage parapet and eaves level. The tower is constructed of stugged sandstone ashlar, topped with a conical ashlar spire and a decorative finial. An inscription plaque is set into a tall pedestal. Situated on a ridge north of Linlithgow, the monument serves as a conspicuous landmark and was erected to commemorate Brigadier Hon. Adrian Hope, who died in India in 1858. It was possibly designed by Brown and Wardrop.
