Description
Mid Calder Parish Church, built between 1530 and 1550, is a Gothic structure made of ashlar with slated roofs. The chancel and apse feature a moulded eaves course and string course, along with massive buttresses and pointed traceried windows. There is a round arched moulded doorway. At the eastern end, the vestry has a lean-to roof and ornamented pinnacles, with a rectangular window above the Sandilands Burial vault below. The transepts and belfry were added to the western end in 1863 by architects Brown and Wardrop. The bell, originally dated 1663, was recast in 1876. Inside, the chancel and apse have been significantly altered with plaster vaults, and there is a carved wooden pew-back dated 1595.
