Description

This is a substantial complex of farm buildings, dating from 1845. It comprises a U-shaped steading, subsequently altered for residential use, along with a two-storey house. The buildings are constructed of cream-coloured, stugged, coursed sandstone rubble, with the western (principal) elevation of the west range squared.

The west range is a two-storey former stable block, with 11 symmetrical bays on its west front. This elevation features a moulded string course, bipartite windows, hoodmoulds, and a crenellated parapet. The central three bays are slightly advanced and taller, as are the gabled end bays. Doors are located centrally and in the second and fourth bays to the right and left; blocked doors are present in each end bay, and bipartite windows fill the remaining ground-floor bays. First-floor windows are also bipartite in each bay. The east (courtyard) elevation has 13 bays, with three Tudor-arched carriage arches in the central, taller section. Above the arches is a bipartite window with a wooden mullion, formerly a hayloft. To the left are six bays with doors flanked by windows in each of the three bays; to the far left is a small bipartite window above a door. The right section has four bays, with a door and a window in each of the two bays, and a small bipartite window above the door on the far right. Ground-floor windows have 8 panes, while first-floor windows on the west elevation have 6 panes. The east elevation features 8-pane and 12-pane sash and case windows, with the carriage archway glazed. A grey slate roof covers the range, with Velux rooflights to the courtyard. Ashlar coped and moulded skews are present, along with blocked skewputts, and a group of three moulded and coped polygonal ashlar stacks rise from the gables of the central three-bay block.

The north range is a single storey, with a nine-bay asymmetrical west elevation. A round-headed arch at the outer left is now glazed as windows. The south (courtyard) elevation is asymmetrical, with six bays containing doors in the first, second and fifth bays from the left.

The east range is also single storey, with a three-bay asymmetrical west (courtyard) elevation. It connects to a U-plan arrangement of buildings at right angles to the southeast. A two-storey house adjoins the east range, featuring a gabled west elevation and a bipartite window at the first floor. Ashlar coped skews, ball finials to skewputts, and a tall stack to the right are notable. Single-storey wings extend from the gabled end walls to the north and south, linked by a wall with a door to the main courtyard.

Sash and case windows are fitted throughout. The buildings are covered with a grey slate roof, have Velux rooflights, ashlar coped skews, and stacks to the gables.

The steading was described in 1845 as being "in the course of erection" and "very superior".
