Description

This is a substantial, U-plan steading built in 1845, which has since been altered for residential use. It’s constructed of cream-coloured, stugged coursed sandstone rubble, with the west (principal) elevation featuring squared stone.

The west range, a two-storey former stable block, has eleven symmetrical bays. The ground floor features a moulded string course and bipartite windows with hoodmoulds, topped by a crenellated parapet. The centre three bays, and the gabled end bays, are slightly advanced and taller. Doors are located in the centre, the second and fourth bays to the right, and the same to the left. Blocked doors are visible on each end bay, with bipartite windows in all other ground floor bays. The first floor windows repeat the pattern. The east (courtyard) elevation has thirteen bays; a prominent central section features three Tudor-arched carriage arches, above which is a bipartite window with a wooden mullion, likely indicating a former hayloft. To the left are six bays with a door flanked by windows in each of the three bays; a small bipartite window sits above the door on the far left. The four bays to the right feature a door and a window in each bay, with a small bipartite window above the door on the far right. The ground floor windows have eight panes, while those on the first floor at the west elevation have six panes. The east elevation features a mix of eight-pane and twelve-pane sash and case windows, with the carriage archway now glazed.

The north range is single-storey and has nine asymmetrical bays. A round-headed arch on the outer left of the north elevation, now filled with windows, is a notable feature. The south (courtyard) elevation, also single-storey, is asymmetrical with six bays, featuring doors in the first, second, and fifth bays from the left.

The east range, single-storey, has three asymmetrical bays facing the courtyard and connects to a two-storey house with a gabled west elevation. The house has a bipartite window at first floor level and ashlar coped skews with ball finials. A tall stack is positioned to the right, and single-storey wings extend from the gabled end walls, joined by a wall with a door leading to the main courtyard.

The steading was described in 1845 as “in the course of erection” and “very superior.” It has a grey slate roof with Velux rooflights. Ashlar coped and moulded skews are present, along with blocked skewputts. There is a group of three moulded and coped polygonal ashlar stacks to the gables of the centre three-bay block. Sash and case windows are throughout, and the roof is covered in grey slate.
