Description

This is a group of farm buildings, constructed in 1845. It is a U-shaped steading, incorporating Tudor detailing and later adapted for residential use. The buildings are largely constructed from cream-coloured, stugged coursed sandstone rubble, with the west (principal) elevation of the west range being squared.

The west range is a two-storey stable block, featuring 11 symmetrical bays. The west elevation has a moulded string course, bipartite windows, hoodmoulds, and a crenellated parapet. The central three bays are slightly advanced and taller, as are the gabled end bays. A doorway is centrally placed, with further entrances to the second and fourth bays on the right and the same on the left. Blocked doorways are located at each end bay, with bipartite windows filling the remaining ground-floor spaces. The first floor has bipartite windows to each bay. The east (courtyard) elevation features 13 bays, including three Tudor-arched carriage arches set within the taller central section; above these arches is a bipartite window with a wooden mullion, formerly a hayloft. To the left are six bays with doors flanked by windows in each of the three bays. To the right are four bays, each with a door and window. The ground floor windows have 8 panes, while the first-floor windows have 6 panes. East elevation windows are sash and case with 8 or 12 panes, and the carriage archway is glazed.

The north range is a single-storey structure with a nine-bay, asymmetrical west elevation, featuring doorways to the second and fifth bays from the right. A round-headed arch on the outer left is now filled with windows. The south (courtyard) elevation is also single-storey and asymmetrical, with six bays, and doorways to the first, second, and fifth bays from the left.

The east range, single-storey, has a three-bay asymmetrical west (courtyard) elevation, with a door to the outer left, linked to a building set at a right angle (southeast). A two-storey house with a gabled west elevation stands adjacent, featuring a bipartite window on the first floor. Ashlar coped skews, ball finials to the skewputts, a tall stack to the right, and single-storey gabled end walls with a connecting wall containing a door to the main courtyard complete the composition.

The buildings have grey slate roofs, with Velux rooflights to the courtyard. Ashlar coped and moulded skews are complemented by blocked skewputts. A group of three moulded and coped polygonal ashlar stacks rise from the gables of the central three-bay block. Sash and case windows are in evidence. The steading was described in 1845 as "in the course of erection" and of "very superior" quality.
