Description
This is a B-listed, U-shaped steading, dating to 1845, that has been altered for residential use. It is constructed primarily of cream-coloured, stugged, coursed sandstone rubble, with the west (principal) elevation of the west range being squared.
The west range is a two-storey former stable block with 11 symmetrical bays. The west elevation features a moulded string course, bipartite windows, hoodmoulds, and a crenellated parapet. The central three bays and the gabled end bays are slightly advanced and taller. A door is centrally placed, with further doors to the second and fourth bays from the right and to the left. Blocked doors are located in each end bay. Bipartite windows are present in the remaining ground floor bays, and in every bay at the first floor. The east (courtyard) elevation has 13 bays, including three Tudor-arched carriage arches to the taller central section, above which is a bipartite window with a wooden mullion, formerly serving as a hayloft. To the left are six bays with doors flanked by windows in each of the three bays. To the right, there are four bays, each containing a door and a window. A small bipartite window sits above the door to the far right. The ground floor windows have 8 panes, while the first floor windows on the west elevation have 6 panes. The east elevation windows are a mix of 8-pane and 12-pane sash and case windows, with the carriage archway glazed.
The north range is single-storey, with a nine-bay asymmetrical west elevation, featuring a door to the second and fifth bays from the right, and a round-headed arch to the outer left which has been filled with windows. The south (courtyard) elevation of the north range has six asymmetrical bays, with doors to the first, second and fifth bays from the left.
The east range is also single-storey. Its west (courtyard) elevation has three asymmetrical bays, joining to a two-storey house at a right angle to the southeast. The house has a gabled west elevation with a bipartite window at first floor level. Ashlar-coped skews, ball finials to the skewputts, and a tall stack to the right are present. Single-storey wings extend north and south from the gabled end walls of the house, joined by a wall with a door to the main courtyard.
The steading was described in 1845 as “in the course of erection” and “very superior”. The windows are primarily sash and case, and the roof is covered in grey slate, with Velux rooflights over the courtyard. Ashlar-coped skews, blocked skewputts, and a group of three moulded and coped polygonal ashlar stacks are situated on the gables of the central three-bay block.
