Description
Hopetoun House was built by Sir William Bruce between 1699 and 1704, and later remodelled and extended by William Adam from 1721 to 1748. The house features a central corps de logis connected by quadrant colonnades to advanced pavilions, all constructed of ashlar stone. In front of the eastern facade, there is a semi-circular terrace adorned with sphinxes.
The central part of the western front, which is two storeys high with a basement, has seven bays, a piended slated roof, and a portico, and is the work of Bruce. The eastern front boasts a long facade with a giant order of Corinthian pilasters and a balustraded attic storey above the cornice, designed by William Adam.
Inside, there is a staircase designed by Bruce, with carving by Alexander and William Eizat. The house contains a splendid suite of rooms, including the Red and Yellow Drawing Rooms, which were designed by Robert Adam.
The pavilions are one storey high and faced with pilasters, featuring central octagonal towers topped with cupolas. The northern pavilion houses the stables, while the southern pavilion contains the ballroom.
