Description
This is probably an 18th-century single-storey, two-bay cottage with a lean-to addition at the east end. The cottage has rubble walls and a reed-thatched roof, which has a decorative ridge and is piended at the west end. It features round-arched windows.
The building is notable as one of a small number of traditional buildings in Scotland that still have a thatched roof. A 2016 survey by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings found only around 200 such buildings remaining, mainly in small rural communities. These thatched buildings provide important insight into traditional building techniques, materials, and a former way of life. The cottage is also known as Obelisk Cottage.
