Description

Abercorn Church and Anglian Monastery is a Romanesque building from the later 11th century that has undergone significant alterations. Originally, it featured an aisleless nave and chancel, constructed from coursed rubble. The church has a skew-gabled roof with a belfry for the sanctus bell located at the eastern end of the nave, and it has slated roofs. There is a round-headed south doorway in the nave, which is now built up.

Notable additions include a west facade from 1893, which features a wheel window and a round-arched doorway. The south side includes the Philipstoun Burial Enclosure from 1723, the Binns Aisle from 1618 containing mural monuments from 1633 and 1642, and the Duddingstone Burial Aisle from 1603 and 1612. The north side is marked by the Hopetoun Aisle, designed by Sir William Bruce between 1707 and 1708, which includes a burial vault and retiring rooms. The nave aisle, added in 1893, also features a belfry.

The interior was remodeled in 1893, except for the Hopetoun Loft at the eastern end of the chancel, which was designed by Bruce in 1707-8, with carving by William Eizat and a heraldic ceiling by Richard Waitt. The loft communicates with the Hopetoun Aisle.
