Description

Dumbarton Central Station is a railway station that originally opened in 1854 but was altered and widened to the south around 1896, with most of the current structures dating from that year. The station features Gothic architectural details and has two similar and parallel island platforms raised on an embankment, which is accessed from below via a later steel girder bridge that carries the railway lines across Church Street.

The embankment is mostly faced with channelled render and some red brick, featuring a corbelled and crenellated parapet and turrets, with red sandstone ashlar dressings. All openings are under two-centred arches, some of which have Gothic tracery and are mostly blocked. The entrance elevation below the bridge has twelve irregular openings, and there are two gated tunnels below the embankment to the west, as well as a segmental-arched bridge over Bankend Road. A vehicle ramp leads from Church Street.

The ticket office and entrance, dating from around 1900, features cusped and decorated painted wooden panelling and simple leaded glass panels in the vestibule. This area is flanked by steps leading to the platforms, each accessed through a decorative archway with a central stair balustrade and tiled walls.

The station buildings are designed in a similar style and are single storey, constructed of painted brick. All openings have square heads with Tudor details in the glazing bars, and some feature curved and canted bays with pilaster strips. The roofs are curved and boarded, made of slate and glazed materials, and are adorned with decorative ridge tiles and corniced stacks. The interiors of the waiting rooms and office include some Tudor-Gothic panelling, and most upper lights and fanlights have simple "art nouveau" leaded glass panels.
