Description
The former gateway of Dumbarton Old Prison, designed by architects James Gillespie and Robert Scott, dates back to the foundation stone being laid on July 19, 1824. The jail was demolished in 1973, leaving only the gateway and some stone fragments incorporated into nearby rubble walls. The gateway is constructed of polished ashlar and remains in its original position. It features an iron-studded oak door set within a round-headed opening, with a band at the impost level and a moulded arch above. There is a frieze and cornice that displays the Dumbarton Burgh arms above the parapet. Additionally, there are two pairs of reset windows and strapwork decoration.
