Description

Stuckgowan House is a Tudor Gothic cottage ornée dating to around 1820, accompanied by a lower, single-story office wing situated on a sloping ground to the right. The house is constructed of painted rubble with red sandstone margins and dressings. Notable features include base courses, pilaster quoin strips, hoodmoulds, advanced eaves supported by brackets, and pointed arch windows.

The south elevation displays a symmetrical arrangement of three bays, with a four-centre-arched door at the centre, a moulded surround, and a glazed vestibule door. Flanking the door are full-height bipartite windows, all with hoodmoulds.

The east elevation shows a symmetrical three-bay block with the lower wing to the right. A bow window occupies the centre, illuminated by three full-height bipartite windows. The flanking bays feature full-height tripartite windows. Dormers, with a shallow gable, are symmetrically placed, with a tripartite window centrally and bipartite windows to either side. The single-story wing to the right is set on the sloping ground and includes a two-window link block, with a narrower section to the right. This section is piend-roofed and slightly advanced, featuring a full-height window on the left and a bipartite window on the right. Dormers, with a shallow gable, are symmetrically disposed.

The north elevation is symmetrically arranged with two bays, divided by an ashlar band course. Bipartite windows are at ground level, and bipartite pointed-arch windows are above. A tall wallhead stack is centrally positioned. A flat-roofed rubble porch, with a boarded door and a large two-pane fanlight, is located in the re-entrant angle to the left.

The west elevation, constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, features a three-bay main block, with the centre bay slightly recessed. The centre bay includes a blind window, while the flanking bays have bipartite windows—those to the outer right are also blind. Symmetrically disposed gabled dormerheads sit over the outer flanking bays, and rooflights are present. A single-story wing, built over a raised basement, extends to the outer left, featuring blind windows at ground and first floor levels. The windows throughout are timber sash and case, with Y-tracery Gothic detailing.

The house is covered with grey slate, featuring a piend and platform roof, broad coped ridge stacks, and octagonal cans.

Inside, the elliptical hall is lit by a lantern, and an elliptical gallery with delicate cast-iron balusters is present, alongside reeded moulding and plain cornices. The fireplaces are plain.

The former kennels and lodge are listed separately.
