Description

This is an early 19th-century lodge and stable complex, located on the Stuckgowan House estate near Tarbet, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, and part of a wider historic landscape. The lodge itself is a two-storey, rectangular building of three bays, likely with alterations in the earlier 19th century, and showcases Tudor-Gothic detailing. The structure is built of painted rubble with ashlar margins and dressings, with droved quoins. It features 4-centred arched windows and doors, with chamfered reveals. The front elevation has a narrow, two-leaf boarded door at the centre, flanked by windows. First-floor windows are symmetrically placed, with a leaded diamond-pane casement in the centre. The windows are timber sash and case with 8 panes, except for the central first-floor window. The roof is grey slate, piended in shape, with lead flashings and cast-iron rooflights at the rear. Coped sandstone wallhead stacks with circular cans are present.

Attached to the rear of the lodge is an L-shaped, single-storey building, formerly kennels and stables, constructed of lime-washed rubble. The principal elevation facing the courtyard has four bays, containing a door to the outer left, a door flanked by a blinded loft window above, a window, and a further door to the right. A gabled hoist door, clad in slate, is located to the left. A broad boarded garage is incorporated into the inner return of the shorter jamb. The stables are also roofed with grey slate and have lead flashings.

To the south of the lodge is a walled garden, enclosed by a rubble wall with slab coping. An entrance is situated within the west wall, again with chamfered reveals. The lodge, kennels, stables, and walled garden are all components of the Stuckgowan House estate; Stuckgowan House and the main lodge are listed separately. Details of the complex are documented in F A Walker and F Sinclair’s North Clyde Estuary (1992), page 55.
