Description
Stuckgowan Cottage is an earlier 19th-century cottage with modern additions, originally a single-storey, 3-bay rectangular building with Tudor detailing. A modern addition has created flanking bays on either side. The original cottage is built of red sandstone ashlar with matching margins and dressings; the later additions are in pink masonry which shows some efflorescence. The cottage sits on a sloping ground to the south and is founded on a substantial concrete base.
The north elevation is the main facade and comprises the original 3-bay cottage, with a further bay added on each side in a sympathetic style. The central bay, containing the entrance, is slightly forward, featuring a Tudor-arched entrance with a pair of boarded doors and a hoodmould. Flanking windows on the original section also have hoodmoulds. The added bays are slightly forward and have Tudor-arched windows, but without hoodmoulds.
The east elevation features a 2-bay modern addition where a large window is on the right side; the roof slopes down from there to the left. The south (rear) elevation has three bays with a half-piended roof section at the center.
The windows are timber, some with transoms and mullions, and some are metal top-hung. One window is a large plate glass picture window. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead flashings and features shouldered, coped, octagonal sandstone stacks topped with decorative octagonal cans. The interior was not inspected in 1994.
Historically, Stuckgowan Cottage served as the lodge to Stuckgowan House, although it is now separated from the main house by the A82 road. Stuckgowan House is listed separately.
