Description
Ballyhennan Burial Ground contains a range of grave monuments dating primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries. Among these are early 18th century slab monuments featuring masonic symbols. A 19th century burial enclosure marks the final resting place of the MacMurrich family of Stuckgowan, located against the western boundary wall and distinguished by decorative cast-iron enclosing railings. Later 19th century monuments take the form of Celtic crosses.
The burial ground is enclosed by a low rubble boundary wall.
Ballyhennan has a history extending back centuries, with reports suggesting Viking burials as early as 1263. The adjacent former Free Church is listed separately. References to the burial ground can be found in W Fraser's CHIEFS OF COLQUHOUN Vol III and F A Walker and F Sinclair's NORTH CLYDE ESTUARY.
