Description
The Macnabs of Innishewan Burial Enclosure was constructed in 1759 for the Macnab family of nearby Innishewan. A weathered plaque inside the enclosure is inscribed ‘BUILT BY JOHN McNAB POSESSER OF INSHOAN 1759’. This rectangular burial enclosure, built of rubble, is open to the sky and has a simple opening on its south side. A railed enclosure is located to the west, and a further small rectangular rubble section extends from the main burial enclosure to the northwest, containing a weathered grave slab. Headstones within the enclosure date from the 18th century onwards, and another weathered grave slab is located to the southwest. The enclosure sits on a raised earth platform within a flat area of land next to the River Dochart, giving it prominence in the landscape and representing an important element of local clan history. The site is part of the Auchlyne Estate. Historical records indicate evidence of earlier circular foundations, suggesting the site is an ancient burial place. Historical references include Ordnance Survey maps from 1859-64, Proceedings of Antiquaries of Scotland (volume LXIII, page 346), W.A. Gillies' In Famed Breadalbane (second edition, 1987, page 82), and C. McKean's Stirling and The Trossachs (1994, page 108).
