Description

West Tornahaish Ancillary Building is a former inn, likely built in the late 18th to early 19th century. This small, single-storey structure with an attic features a rectangular plan and three bays, along with a lean-to outshot at the rear. It is located at the southeast gateway to Strathdon, near the Old Military Road and the site of the former Tornahaish Ford. The building is constructed from coursed and squared pink and grey granite, with deep-set openings.

The entrance elevation faces east and includes a boarded timber door with a narrow four-part fanlight at the center, flanked by windows in the adjacent bays. There are small attic windows on the north and south gables. The windows have a four-pane glazing pattern and are made of timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slates and features three cast iron rooflights. The gablehead stacks are made of coped ashlar and include thackstanes and some cans, along with ashlar-coped skews.

Inside, the building retains a fine early interior. It has boarded timber doors with early ironwork latches, as well as panelled timber doors leading to box beds and wall cupboards. The kitchen is located to the south on the ground floor and features a monumental segmental fireplace arch, with evidence of a canopied central hearth uncovered in 2004 and a working swey. The room to the north has a timber surround for a granite fireplace and a cast iron horseshoe grate, with box beds along the west wall. There are timber dividing walls in the center, showing evidence of former box beds, and a wall recess behind the front door. A timber staircase runs north-south, leading to an open sleeping ledge opposite the landing, which includes two double box beds measuring 5 feet 6 inches long. The first floor is mostly lined with timber.

There are also two single-storey, rectangular-plan rubble ancillary buildings to the north of the main house. The northern range is a byre, likely from the 18th century, which has two later cart bays at the north end and retains interior timberwork with trevises, having been converted from a former dwelling house. The southern range incorporates a barn, stable, and grain loft, with ladder access to an attic bothy and a mill course on the west side. This range features a distinctive double-lap slating technique using bull nose slates sourced from Kincardine O'Neil church. Additionally, a wheel pit and mill course for a horizontal mill have been excavated at the rear.
